Crossroads (Quincy)

Devil's Marbles, Northern Territory

Two days ago, Travis and I had a tough decision to make: Continue our journey north to Darwin as planned, or turn south towards Alice Springs. With the help from some locals who told us monsoons and cyclones were predicted to hit Darwin soon, we decided to turn south and spend more time enjoying the outback of Australia. We are currently in Alice Springs, camping in an unforgiving environment…unforgiving except for the spectacular water hole 200 meters away from our campsite and the friendly people.

Australia is full of friendly people! It is so different from life in the U.S., where a lot of people don’t go out of their way to say hello to strangers and instead keep to themselves. Here, it is strange if we pass a car on the highway without a wave or a peace sign exchanged. If there is one thing I will bring back with me, it is the realization that such a simple friendly gesture can make life more pleasant for everyone!

We have a loose plan now to make it to Adelaide on Christmas Eve and then spend Christmas at a campground, like we did for Thanksgiving! I’m already planning the feast! Then, we would like to try to make it to Sydney for an unforgettable New Years Eve.

To all of our friends and family back in the states – we miss you!
